Cowra - Construction, August 2027

Not much work has been done on the new layout this month, due to the Group's attendance at three exhibitions in quick succession across late July to late August with our current layout, Goulburn. In particular, no work progressed on the backyard modules or the J pieces. For the two front sceniced modules only a few small items of work were achieved.

On the former Railway Institute building a little work was done to fit some of the external cladding and roofing. Evergreen styrene scribed V-groove sheets were used for the lower parts of the external walls (#4060), and for the 3 walls on the small part of the building that protrudes out on the track side of the structure (#4080). Northeastern corrugated metal roof sheets were trimmed to size and fitted to the main part of the roof using contact cement. Some of the barge boards, fascias and gable end trims have been fitted using various sizes of Evergreen styrene strips. This is still very much a work in progress.

A pic of the former Railway Institute building under construction. It looks quite messy at this stage but (hopefully) it will all come together in the end.

A white painted fence made from old rail and other steel parts runs perpendicular back from the end of the Dock platform and up beside the Gang Shed and up the slope towards Lynch St. The fence is in 2 parts with a gate between providing vehicular access for the area around the former Railway Institute building and behind the Gang Shed.

The current gate hinged off the fence seen in the pic above. Note the short piece of vertical rail embedded in the ground to stop the gate from swinging open too far.

The model of the fence was constructed using Evergreen styrene 1.5mm I-beam (#271) to represent the old rail, both as top and bottom rails and as uprights. These were suitably trimmed and fixed together using MEK. Fibreglass flyscreen mesh was cut into individual panel pieces sized to suit and glued onto the styrene fence frame with super glue. The gate is a Uneek models #611 etched brass farm gate. 3 pieces of fine cotton thread were glued across the back of the gate to represent the twisted wire. The fence and the gate assemblies were separately spray painted white before fixing them to the layout. Small holes were poked into the foam scenery with a nail and the fence posts fixed in with PVA glue. A small piece of black chain was fixed near the end of the gate to a short piece of I-beam vertically fixed into the scenery behind the open gate.
